Family Workshop: Lotte Reiniger’s Fairytales

+ Neil BrandOriginal composition & live piano accompaniment

+ Sónia BaptistaSimultaneous translation & interpretation

Reiniger is the author of the oldest surviving animated feature film, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, which emerged as the culmination of a series of shorter works usually grouped under the label ‘Lotte Reiniger’s Fairytales’. The extraordinarily wondrous universe created by the German filmmaker is the outcome of limitless diegetic imagination and formal inventiveness, which Reiniger explored, in the course of her long 60 year career, through the creative use of the silhouette and shadow animation. These timeless works will be given here a new contemporary twist, with the debuting of a new musical composition by Neil Brand, performed and interpreted live. In this workshop, local and visiting families will have the opportunity to learn about the myriad forms of interaction music and cinema make possible, and to jointly develop a small piece of collective music. A unique chance to watch the work of Lotte Reiniger, accompanied by an improvisation on the piano by Neil Brand, and live translation and narration by Portuguese poet and choreographer Sónia Baptista. Duration: 80 min.
