Underscore energises the creation of music and sonic art in close relationship with moving images and the archive, stimulating the debate at the intersection of these domains. Condensed into a week of multiple events and activities – cinema-concerts, discussions and workshops –, our aim is to progressively expand its scope, to build a forum for exchange and debate around the relationship between music, sound and moving images: a composition lab.
The Underscore Festival aims to promote the propagation and diversifying of perspectives, both present-day and erstwhile, and to subvert disciplinary ranks, exploiting the dynamic connections that exist between different artistic dimensions, to explore, strengthen and expand music and sonic practices in their interrelation with the moving image and the archive.
The project will develop and extend the traditional cinema-concert format with the goal of broadening and transcending the scope of conventional performance, creating unique interdisciplinary encounters and a polymorphous reading of the archival object.
Underscore brings sound and music to the fore, to the stage before the screen.
